CTO FOUNDATION PROVIDES US$50,000 FOR TOURISM STUDIES IN 2001
BARBADOS (9 July, 2001).In 2001, the CTO Foundation, the scholarship
programme of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, provided US$50,000 in
scholarships and grants for Caribbean nationals pursuing tourism and
hospitality studies or language training, within or outside of the
region.
Winners of this year's CTO-Michael Manley scholarships were Ms.
Ginea Wilson of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Ms. Michelle McDonald
of Jamaica, Mr. Garfield Joseph of Antigua and Barbuda and Ms. Alicia
Aquing of Trinidad and Tobago. This scholarship goes towards persons
studying tourism or hospitality at the Masters or postgraduate level.
Six study grants were also provided to persons pursuing different levels
of certification in tourism and hospitality studies and includes one
person studying English as a foreign language.
The CTO Foundation, set up in 1997, is registered in the New York State,
USA, as a Not-for-Profit Corporation, established exclusively for
charitable and educational purposes. Its main aim is to provide
scholarships and study grants to students and industry personnel who are
Caribbean nationals from CTO member countries who want to undertake
studies in the areas of tourism, hospitality and language training. The
Foundation supports individuals who demonstrate high levels of academic
achievement and leadership potential and who express a strong interest
in contributing to Caribbean tourism.
Since 1997, the Foundation has provided 9 major scholarships and 27
study grants, amounting to just over US$200, 000, to deserving Caribbean
nationals. Major CTO Foundation sponsors include American Express,
American Airlines, the CTO Chapters worldwide and numerous CTO allied
members.
The Caribbean Tourism Organization is a tourism development agency
comprising 33 member governments from the French, English, Spanish and
Dutch speaking Caribbean, as well as private sector organizations, with
headquarters in Barbados and marketing operations in New York, London
and Toronto.
The CTO's primary objective is to provide to and through its members,
the services and information needed for the development of sustainable
tourism for the economic and social benefit of the Caribbean people. The
organization provides specialized support and technical assistance to
member countries in the areas of marketing, human resource development,
research and statistics and sustainable tourism development.
