Dear friends,

Hello to all.

Though we're some time away from production, I wanted to spread the word
about the creation of a new general interest magazine covering nature
and
conservation in the Virgin Islands (both American and British) and
Puerto
Rico. Besides raising environmental awareness, this publication could be
a
great opportunity to win converts to your cherished field of study
and/or do
some great public relations for your cause or nonprofit. Details follow:

The concept of the magazine:

“COEREBA [tentative name] is a bilingual magazine that, through engaging
text and interesting visuals, gets people excited about understanding
nature
in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and participating in its
conservation.

The magazine is designed for anyone who has ever shown curiosity about
or
admiration for the natural world, and it is produced for men, women,
teenagers and older children. Its content is of interest to residents of
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, visitors to these Caribbean
territories,
as well as other Americans residing in the United States mainland.

The magazine is scientifically accurate and non-partisan.

COEREBA is the first magazine to explore the natural world of both
Puerto
Rico and the American and British Virgin Islands and the first to do so
while being bilingual in English and Spanish.”

Under the overarching goal of raising environmental awareness are
several
other goals that will give further direction to the publication. These
can
roughly be divided into environmental and non-environmental goals.

Among the environmental goals are explaining the linkage between
conservation and sustainable development and quality of life; showcasing
environmental research and projects taking place in Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands, especially the work of environmental nonprofits; and
providing straightforward ways by which readers can successfully
participate
in the conservation of the local environment.

Non-environmental goals include fostering literacy in Puerto Rico and
the
Virgin Island; creating bridges of understanding, appreciation and
cooperation between the people of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and
the
continental United States; and, by being a bilingual publication, be a
learning tool for the English language in mostly Spanish-speaking Puerto
Rican audiences.

A core team of people already is in place to produce this publication.
Fundraising for the publication will begin in mid-2003 and production
should
begin sometime in late 2004 or (most likely) 2005. (In case you're
wondering, the business plan for the magazine also includes advertising
potential, internal organization [departments, features, etc.],
readership
analysis, marketing plan, introduction to magazines, etc.).

We're always looking for people interested in participating as writers,
contributors, artists, etc. If the publication whets your appetite or
you
desire further information, please contact me at jplacer@coereba.org.

Thanks for your attention and take care.

Truly,

José Placer
