Seventh Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable
Tourism Development (STC-7)
Organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), in collaboration with
the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and the Government of
Trinidad and Tobago

"Keeping the Right Balance - Sustainable Tourism Through Diversity"

Hilton Tobago, April 26th to 29th, 2005

Sustainable Tourism
As the most tourism-dependent region in the
world, Caribbean tourism stakeholders are faced
with immense challenges: maintaining the tourist
flows necessary to guarantee economic stability;
ensuring the proper use of resources for the
benefit of both locals and visitors and making
sure that the resources that now attract visitors
to our region will continue to exist and attract
visitors. The relationship between tourism and
environment must be intimate and infinite and the
importance of this relationship is more relevant
to the Caribbean because of the different size of
each country and the varying levels of
development and resources.

The question remains: what does the Caribbean
want: tourism growth or tourism development? If
we say development, how do we ensure its
sustainability? What elements should be present
in a tourism product to guarantee its
sustainability? What are the options in the
Caribbean? In the last decade Ecotourism has been
recognized as a viable form of sustainable
tourism development. Its capacity to generate
economic benefits by contributing to the
protection of natural and cultural resources and
involving the local communities has made it an
alternative form of tourism, especially in
protected and remote rural areas.

Conference Theme and Objectives

"Keeping the Right Balance" is the overall motto
of our sustainable tourism conferences,
acknowledging that the sustainability of tourism
in the Caribbean requires proper co-ordination
and the co-operation of all stakeholders, and
recognizing the need to maintain the balance
between economic, environmental and social
development.

The Conference would focus on the initiatives
taken in the Caribbean to contribute to the
sustainable development of our tourism industry
and the potential use of Ecotourism as an
instrument to achieve this goal. The host
destination, Tobago, would be one of the case
studies.

Tobago

Twenty-two miles, or 35 km, away from Trinidad,
the island of Tobago offers a striking contrast
in landscapes and people. Tobago provides a much
more relaxed introduction to the Caribbean. The
pace of life here is slower. Away from the
established, but not crowded, resorts at the
western end of the island, are plenty of secluded
coves and bays where you can idle away the hours
in the water and the sun in classic Caribbean
fashion.

Water sports feature strongly in Tobago's
attractions: divers, windsurfers and fishing
enthusiasts will love its coral reefs, beautiful
beaches, clear waters and smart hotels.
Eco-tourists will find rivers, waterfalls,
natural reserves and a rich bird life, as well as
underwater dives to see the mysteriously
beautiful manta rays.
